27 August 2013, Jakarta (Indonesia). READI supported the EU and ASEAN in organising the first ASEAN-EU Roundtable on Climate Change, which was held in the Indonesian capitol Jakarta today.
Senior officials in charge of environment and climate change from the ten ASEAN member states and the ASEAN Secretariat met with the EU’s senior negotiator in the global climate negotiations and representatives of the EU Delegation in Jakarta. They discussed issues pertaining to the ASEAN action plan on joint response to climate change, the EU energy and climate package 2030, cooperation and research initiatives, positions in UN climate change negotiations, disaster risk reduction as it pertains to climate change, the EU’s funding modalities for combatting climate change, and others.
Participants agreed to meet annually, back-to-back with the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change (AWGCC), and to focus each meeting on a specific technical issue of common concern. This annual roundtable shall further serve as a forum to coordinate closer EU-ASEAN cooperation in the sector.
READI is stepping up its support to a EU-ASEAN policy dialogue on climate change under its second annual work plan for 2013-14 and climate change has been elevated to become one of READI’s nine components.
READI is implemented on behalf of the EU and ASEAN by a consortium of firms led by Altair Asesores.
