Key Officials from Vietnam and ASEAN Secretariat visit the EU in November 2013

As part of the overall process for managing its relations with key dialogue partners, ASEAN has designated Vietnam as its coordinator for relations with the EU. Vietnam will fulfill this mission from 2012 to 2015. Past experience has demonstrated that the coordination of ASEAN relations with the EU could be a particularly challenging task given the complexity of the respective decision-making processes on both sides as well as the current broadening and intensifying of the cooperation agenda between the two regions.

The ASEAN Coordinating Country for the EU's coordination role will be particularly important for political/security and social/cultural pillar activities, which have been the particular focus of the new ASEAN-EU Plan of Action 2013-2017, and where the EU has been developing new competences, policies and instruments. In order to help the ASEAN Coordinating Country for the EU undertake its coordination mission in an optimal manner, the working visit to EU institutions was organised for a small group of key officials from the Vietnamese foreign ministry, Vietnam’s permanent mission to ASEAN, and the ASEAN Secretariat on 25-27 November 2013.
